Introduction

The PMOD/WRC in affiliation with the ETH Zürich offers a number of further education courses and projects in the Department of Physics and the Department of Environmental Systems Science.

Prof. Louise Harra conducts research based on solar activity – the triggering of solar flares and coronal mass ejections, and solar wind formation and propagation. She has been involved in the design and development of space instruments during her career.  These include the EUV Imaging Spectrometer onboard the Hinode spacecraft, launched in 2006, and the EUV Imager onboard the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, launched in 2020. She is an affiliated professor in the Solar Astrophysics Group, Institute of Particle Physics and Astrophysics, at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

Research at PMOD/WRC

The future strategy of PMOD/WRC includes the cooperation between PMOD/WRC and ETH Zurich. The six core areas that PMOD/WRC will undertake are:

  • World Radiation Center: The center serves as an international calibration center for meteorological radiation instruments and develops radiation instruments for use on the ground and in space.
  • Space projects: Develop instruments for imaging and radiation measurements of the Sun.
  • Technology: Underpin the design and development of the instruments for ground and space.
  • Climate science: Research the influence of natural and anthropogenic activity on Earth’s climate.
  • Solar Science: Research the causes of solar activity.
  • Teaching: Carry out teaching at different levels at the ETH Zurich (see below).

A number of third-party funded projects, so-called Thematic projects, are also conducted at the PMOD/WRC.

Studies and Further Education at PMOD/WRC

PMOD/WRC offers a number of MSc projects which can be found on the “Job Vacancies” page.

Seminars

Onsite and online seminars are regularily held at the PMOD/WRC while a larger choice of lecture series and events are held at the ETH Zurich. These allow students, researchers and institute staff to keep up-to-date with the latest scientific developments in the natural sciences.

Education and Research

The current special supplement “Education & Research” provides information on training, study and research possibilities in Canton Grison. Various editorial articles shed light on current issues in education and research from the perspective of the Grison region.
