The measurement of solar irradiance in Space at PMOD/WRC has various objectives. Current research themes address different aspects concerning solar physics, solar monitoring and the influence of the sun on Earth’s climate.
In order to detect variability in solar irradiance with high accuracy, measurements have to be conducted outside the Earth’s atmosphere. The influence of the atmosphere, which absorbs and reflects a portion of the solar irradiance, is too great to allow solar variations to be measured at the surface. Hence, stratospheric balloon experiments were already being conducted in the 1970s at the PMOD/WRC. Radiometers were installed on a balloon platform which were able to track the sun. Rocket experiments then followed, allowing several minutes of measurements to be conducted outside Earth’s atmosphere for the first time. A long-term series of satellite experiments began in 1988 which continue to today. Irradiance instruments for use in space are designed, produced and tested at the PMOD/WRC. These activities are conducted as collaborations with national and international space agencies, satellite companies, Swiss industry and various research partners.
As a result, the PMOD/WRC has attained a wide degree of familiarity, which has continuously allowed us to start new projects and allowed us to measure solar irradiance time-series of high importance and international recognition.
